Z-CRIO THERMAL LABELS FOR FROZEN PRODUCTS

The project was implemented on the initiative of X5 Retail Group, which is supposed to be one of the first customers. The start-up project was supported by the venture capital fund of Tomsk State University in 2018.

After the start of industrial production of thermal labels, X5 Group intends to introduce them to the supply chain and to oblige its suppliers to use thermal labels for marking frozen products delivered to stores in the distribution network. It's no secret that often frozen products undergo cyclic defrosting during transportation.

The main purpose of the label is to irreversibly change color when the temperature regime is violated, which clearly indicates the correct keeping of the «cold chain» – that frozen foods were stored and transported in needed temperature regime.

If the temperature of the frozen object is getting higher than minus 18 ° C, the thermal tag irreversibly changes color from white to blue. When the temperature rises to minus 16 ° С and higher, the mark gradually turns blue.

Indicator windows demonstrate how long the frozen product was in inappropriate conditions. The indicators are self-activating during freezing together with the food.

Thermal label is simple device, which can be used by warehouse employees with low qualification.

In September 2019 thermal tags were successfully tested in the field. An experimental batch of several dozen pallets with frozen shrimps was marked with thermal indicators at the supplier's warehouse (Agama Istra, one of the Russian leaders in the production of frozen seafood and fish).

After transportation and unloading the labels did not change color, that is, the products did not defrost during transportation. Shrimp arrived at the distribution center in perfect condition. Trial defrosting products showed 100% response of indicators with color changing.

A key development phase of the project is now completed. Now we plan to release the first pilot batch of thermal indicators (10 000 pcs).

Our team is looking for an industrial partner who will be ready to invest in production and will take on key tasks for the production of tags. The needs only of the Russian frozen food market for thermal indicators amount to more than 20 million units per year.
